A Yogi, A Dancer, & A Dog… in the Red River Gorge

Tango and I went camping and hiking with my girlfriend, Taylor in the Red River Gorge last weekend. It was the perfect, short getaway for the holiday. We just went for one night as we both had obligations over the other days, but we scored the most perfect weather, so it was well worth it.

The Red River Gorge is just under a two-hour drive from Louisville so it was nice to get the out-of-town, vacay feeling, without the grueling long drive that usually accompanies it. We camped at Miguel’s (because that’s what you do) and hiked all around. We had to steer clear of the Natural Bridge State Park area because all the trails in that section are anti-pets… <—DUMB.

When you go outdoors with a yogi and a dancer, you get LOTS of posed photos.

Tango loves road trips & camping (like his mom). He was STOKED… to say the least.

We had tons of great food, but these strawberries were the best. IMG_8737

There are a million cool trails to hike, but our favorite was the Double Arch.

Really cool underneath, perfect for photo ops.

Really tiny in between the two arches, I don’t recommend trying to squeeze in there (like I did).

You can even scramble up to the top ledge and cruise around up there!

Here’s what it looks like underneath:

The space between the two arches was a little tight… but I made it happen.

I can’t do handstands… or a scorpion… so I went halfsies.

My Mini Goals for the Week

We all have big huge goals for ourselves – health goals, career goals, personal and/or financial goals. You don’t have to spend ALL your energy on the big mamma-jamma goals though… It’s great to have them, but it’s also important to have mini ones every now and then too. Mine this week:

1) Floss every day.

Because just like working out, if you only do it every now and then, it’s going to hurt like hell every time you start back up… and so you’ll avoid it. If you get into the habit of it, it’s not as bad, you’re healthier, and everything is better. And just like Julia Roberts’ character, Vivian, states in Pretty Woman, “You shouldn’t neglect your gums.”

2) Run with Tango at 7:30am, 3 days this week.

It’s going to be a hot, muggy week so getting my run in and my dog walked, simultaneously and early, are both good things. I’ve been having trouble running lately with this pain in my abdomen, but if the running doesn’t happen, the walk certainly will. And what better way to do it than first thing in the morning? Well, second, after teaching my TRX Bootcamp class…

3) In bed by 9:30, 30 minutes of reading, every night.

The first part is easy. I wake up at 5am most days of the week so usually I’m ready to pass the F out before 10pm anyway. I’ve got a great new book though but haven’t been reading it. I have the bad habit of taking my computer to bed with me and cruising Facebook and Instagram before sleeping. This is bad for two reasons: 1) I lose track of time while aimlessly scrolling down these endless pages and often stay up later than planned. 2) Looking at brightly lit screens is one of the worst things you can do before you go to sleep. It actually stimulates your brain, making you more alert and awake, therefore making it harder to fall asleep and less likely to get good, quality sleep once you’re out. Computer out, book in! I’m excited about my new book and would like to get it finished this week!

IMG_0414don’t have any photos of me reading in bed… this’ll have to do.

Do you have any mini goals you’re working on at the moment?

Friday’s Letters… on a Wednesday.

Friday’s Letters theme by Ashley.

Dear this weekend (and next), I don’t have to work. Get ready for me.

large-3via

Dear Tango, you have no idea that we’re going camping with Taylor this weekend, but we are. And you’re going to be stoked!

Dear Taylor, our camping trip this weekend is my jam. I wish we had this sweet van to cruise in. We’ll have to figure out an equally awesome photo with my Mazda hatchback…in the woods…  ; )

Dear Girl in the Waiting Room with the German Sentence Tattooed on Your Boobs, now that you’re very, very pregnant and your boobs are even larger than they were when you got that tattoo (I’m assuming) your massive cleavage blocks out an entire word and I can’t read it. Your low-cut top suggests you want people to read it… think about that the next time you get a tattoo in that region.

Dear 5cm Ovarian Cyst. I don’t have time for you and you’re seriously screwing up my active life. I need you to go away. Soon. As in… sooner than the 4 -6 week time frame the Dr. says it takes.

Dear The Internet, you don’t have to be SO forthcoming with all your info. I just went from reading that ovarian cysts go away on their own, to reading that they cause cancer, to reading that you might never be able to have children if they’re severe enough. That’s a bit aggressive. You should save some of those scarier articles for page 2 of the Google search results.

Dear Lululemon, your Coastal Tank is my new jam. So light and airy, SPF 50 (who knew your clothes could block UV rays?) I even wore it out to a fancy evening with just a strapless bra underneath. High five. Now please make more, because you’re sold out and I’d like one in another color.  : )

Dear The Book Of Mormon (the musical), you are coming to Louisville and I can’t wait to see you!!! I’ve been needing a good show to see and I’ve been wanting to see you for years now. PUMPED.

Dear Summer, I’m super glad you’re on the way. Can’t tell you how much I’ve enjoyed being barefoot most of the day and the perfect temperature for long evening walks with Tango and Churchill this week.

Happy Birthday, Man-friend!

Happy Birthday to my favorite person! My climbing/traveling/training/work/life partner. The one who makes me laugh every day, the one who inspires me, the one who loves me the way I’ve always hoped I could be loved. The one who can juggle a high level career and still be an amazing and involved dad to his sons. The one I love more than I ever thought possible. Thank you for being you.

Happy Birthday, Fraser! I love you!

My Favorite Fitness Apps

There are a million apps out there… and tons of fitness-related ones. Some are more aimed at fitness consumers and general population, some more towards fitness professionals. I’ve downloaded a bunch over the years, but have found that I only really use a selected few. These are those: [Read more…]

Canada Weekend Recap

IMG_8219

These trips to see my man-friend are always super short, but we tend to fit a lot into the weekend… Including, unfortunately, watching the MMA fights Saturday night – as a result of my losing this year’s NCAA bracket bet. Moving on: The great thing about being in the Canadian Rockies is that everywhere you look, there’s a picturesque view.

Exhibits A – C:

IMG_8177

The other great thing: Each time I visit Canada, I find out new, exciting things that are just… so… Canadian. It makes me smile. We were checking out a friend’s gym and it was one of those mega gyms that has everything you could possibly want in a fitness center. It was absolutely huge. I was already walking around and marveling at the size of the place (it included an ice rink for hockey practic, and another ice skating rink for figure skating lessons) when I rounded a corner and stopped dead in my tracks. There was a THIRD rink! And it was for Curling. Ha!

IMG_8220

I don’t know why I thought it was reserved for special Olympic athlete practice (we were in a normal fitness club, with tons of families around), but I was under the impression that we weren’t allowed to be on the ice… But we watched several people come and go, grabbing the broom thingy, putting their shoes in a cleaning contraption before stepping onto the ice and curling away. So after everyone cleared out, we hopped out there to give it a whirl ourselves.

He’s no pro, but it’s not his first rodeo…

IMG_8224

It was mine, however… #kook

(iPhone screen started getting foggy by this point in the cold rink)

Needless to say, I wasn’t so awesome at the few throws (tosses? slides? curls?) I managed. That thing is way heavier than you’d imagine so the first time it barely passed the half-way mark. The second time, I put my back into it and the thing crashed into the wall at the other end. Oops. It’s nice to know we could go back in the future and get some more practice in… : )

Another fun thing I discovered?

#mindblownIMG_8226

Reese’s come in packs of 3! All the time. I bought these and was pumped to see there was an extra one in the package. (This is completely satisfying because whenever I’d had these in the past, I’ve always wanted more than 2, but felt a little ridiculous buying the king-sized option of 4.) This 3rd peanut butter cup isn’t  an “extra” though; they’ve apparently always come in threes in Canada.  WTH?! Why don’t they do that in the states?!  Way to go, Canada. Way to go.
