2016 Game Plan: Putting It On Paper. Together.

I love making New Year’s Resos. I don’t feel like I have to overhaul my life or anything, I just like finding little things that I can implement immediately and often that will help me move the progress needle a little further. If I can go to bed each night and ask myself what I did to get a little better this year, I want to be able to answer with something.

My man-friend and I decided to do our 2016 goals together on New Year’s Day morning and so we sat on the couch for a couple hours to knock them out. [Read more…]

What you can squeeze into a weekend in Hawaii: O’ahu

I’ve been traveling for my job for many years now and get sent all over the United States. I’ve never gotten asked to go to Hawaii until just a couple weeks ago. Knowing the odds of getting sent a second time would be slim to none, I attempted to fit as much in as I could in what little time I had. Booking the earliest flight in Friday morning and the latest flight out Sunday night made this possible. Here’s what I was able to squeeze in to this short trip:  [Read more…]

It’s been a blustery last few days here in San Diego. Tango’s ears blowing in the wind was my jam this week, as well as knowing I get to leave for Thailand in 4 days! I’ve got the weekend off and plan on a brew fest with friends, watching Netflix, and hanging more with Tango on the beach. Here’s what else is on my radar currently:

Making: Trader’s Joe’s Pumpkin Muffins. I don’t care if it’s 80 degrees in SD. It’s fall in my kitchen.

Wanting: to go camping… I’d like a couple nights sleeping outside, somewhere quiet.  [Read more…]

Two Days in Dublin

Because this trip was mostly work related (more for my man-friend than for me) there wasn’t a whole lot of time for cruising around outside of the city. We were in Dublin for 5 days, but one of those I was sick and two of them I was working, which left only a couple more for sight seeing.  [Read more…]

Off to Bali!

I’m headed out today to Bali, Indonesia for our annual 3-day TRX Instructor’s Summit. It’s like a giant fitness retreat with my TRX family from all over the world. We’ve got 27 countries being represented at this year’s summit and I couldn’t be more stoked to see everybody there, including my man-friend! We’ll have 3 days at the summit and then another 5 days to ourselves, which I’m looking forward to immensely. Hello hammock on the beach! Peace out cell phone & email inbox!

I’m not as stoked about the 34 hours of travel to get there, but I’m trying to look past that. I’ve got my books on my kindle, I’ve got my work that needs to be finished, I’ve got free wine to look forward to on the plane. Here I go! Back in two weeks!

You’re free, Genie.

I feel like I’ve lost a close friend. I know I’ve never met Robin Williams, but his body of work has had a profound influence on me throughout my entire life. It’s crazy to think how many movies he did, for children and adults alike. From the craziness of Aladdin’s Genie, to the seriousness of his roles in movies like Dead Poets Society and Good Will Hunting, he was my all-time favorite actor.

His movies seemed to parallel my life for a while there… In the mid 90s, when my parents split, Mrs. Doubtfire had come out and made me feel everything. It was a heart wrenching movie at times, but he made the best out of it all and I think that had a profound impact on me and how I carried myself through that same situation. This ending scene resonated with me and it’s the first time I believe a movie ever hit me. I’ll always remember this scene, as I’m sure any other 90s kid with divorced parents does.

Later on he played “Jack” a story of a boy who had a disease that made him age prematurely. I used to babysit a little boy named Clinton, who had Progeria, a form of similar disease. You don’t actually grow tall and look like an adult, like the movie, but your body ages far faster than any normal person’s. Most children with progeria only live to be around 8 or so. My friend, Clinton died at 6 years old in 1999 and this movie I watched a million times to help me cope. Nobody played “kid” better than Robin Williams. He never lost his sense of joy and abandon, which is what made him perfect for movies like Jack, Hook, Jumanji, etc. It’s what reminds me to remember to play.
As somebody who doesn’t like to talk about things that are bothering me (which I’m aware of and working on), it helps just to feel sometimes.  His movies made everybody feel. There’s no way you could watch Robin Williams and not laugh, cry, or just feel his sincerity of every single role he played. One of the coolest things he did was tour for the USO. He did shows for our troops for nearly 15 years. I’ve always compared Robin Williams to Bob Hope, another of my favorite actors/comedians who also made frequent USO tours to lift the spirits of the troops and just love seeing photos and videos from his stops. Here’s one of his most famous:
The way Robin Williams’ put expression into his characters gave us all the ability to relate to him. It didn’t matter if he was dancing around the house while vacuuming, or playing somebody as serious as a doctor, therapist,  or teacher, it felt like we were watching somebody we really knew.
I don’t know of another movie that talks about love as well as in What Dreams May Come. This movie can be a hard one to watch, but the way it expresses love in one the most enduring ways I’ve ever seen. If you’ve never seen it, please do.
“Is that a kind of occupational hazard of soul mates? One’s not one without the other?”
“It’s not about understanding. It’s about NOT giving up.”
So thank you, Robin for your kindness, your amazing ability to tell a story, your sincerity in your work, and for making us feel it all. I’m sorry you had to go through what hell you did. I hope you are now finally at peace.

Somebody’s totally having a case of the Mondays… #itsme

large via

There’s nothing horrible about today so I guess I shouldn’t complain… but I’m going to anyway. You can exit out of this post now if you want… I won’t be offended. My Mondays are usually very productive. There’s always a lot to get done on Monday so I hit the ground running. I’m usually getting home from my weekend travel, getting rolling for the week ahead, and just feeling energized. Today is not that Monday. Today is the stereotypical Monday that everybody loves to complain about. I’m tired. I’m not being productive, I don’t want to do a workout, I can’t even take the nap I just tried to take. I was too drained to go to the ballet class that I’d planned on taking this morning as well. I’m just feeling… blah.

So I’m just going to focus on getting through the work I have to get done, then take the dogs for a long walk and hope that reenergizes me. I’m working on lots of things for this week, so stay tuned for a playlist, a giveaway, and some pretty photos. In the meantime, I think it’s time for a little James Taylor Pandora station action and a deep breath.

Happy Monday, everybody. Let’s get through this bitch.
