Resting My Body Then Organizing My Sh*t for The New Year

Rest & Organizations

I end my year usually by taking the last week of the year off work. I need at least 4 or 5 days to chill and rejuvenate. This typically includes lots of naps, indulging in yummy food and holiday dranks, and much needed time with my family. After not working or working out for several days, I finally feel ready to put myself back in the game… slowly.

In order to set myself up for smarter productivity in the new year, I find that I operate better in spaces that work well. For me, this means no clutter, adequate space for everything that goes there, and an easy, quick way to deal with it all. It needs to be functional. I’m more relaxed and more productive in spaces that are simple and efficient, so with my time off this holiday weekend, here’s where I’m spending my time organizing: my purse & wallet, the kitchen, my closet, and my workspace. I tackle just one thing per day so it’s quick & doesn’t feel overwhelming. [Read more…]

Hosting Holiday Dinner? These Recipes Are My Go-To!

image via

One of the most stressful holiday events can be the job of hosting Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner. Having to take on cooking a huge meal, timing it all correctly, and having it actually turn out… well… the opposite of Griswold Family Turkey from Christmas Vacation is a lot. Cooking a turkey? Actually stuffing the stuffing? Yikes.

Two years ago, my man-friend and I decided to take the leap and cook our own Christmas dinner. We weren’t hosting a huge get-together thankfully – it was just us and the kids. We decided if anything went badly, we’d have steak and pumpkin pie for dinner. Turns out, from the turkey to the dressing to the gravy, everything was fantastic.

Here are the recipes we used that even we could handle. [Read more…]

2016 Game Plan: Putting It On Paper. Together.

12401902_10101610621838203_1332565215970330986_o

I love making New Year’s Resos. I don’t feel like I have to overhaul my life or anything, I just like finding little things that I can implement immediately and often that will help me move the progress needle a little further. If I can go to bed each night and ask myself what I did to get a little better this year, I want to be able to answer with something.

My man-friend and I decided to do our 2016 goals together on New Year’s Day morning and so we sat on the couch for a couple hours to knock them out. [Read more…]

My man-friend came to visit for a week during Thanksgiving. YAY! It was such a hectic week with the holidays, lots of dinners, visiting with friends and family, etc. We had a blast, but it went way too quickly. We got to have dinner with our favorite industry pals, Chris and Kara, got to see a University of Louisville basketball game at the YUM Center downtown with my brother and his wife, and we had 3 Thanksgivings to attend with my family. That was just the first three days. I wish I’d gotten more photos with my family, but we were having a good time hanging out so I forgot. We ate, we drank, we played Aggravation, a family fave. Tango also had a blast. He loved having a guy around to rough house with.

We got to lay on the couch and watch a movie (The Expendables 3, vastly entertaining) and eat ice cream. We got to go see The Mockingjay Friday night, which was sooooo good and now has us pining for the last installment. Can’t believe we have to wait another year to for the next one to come out. Well… I can believe it. Those movie execs know what they’re doing. It just sucks. I think I’ll re-read the book so I can get back in the spirit. We also got to go pick out a Christmas tree! More on that later.

My man-friend had never been to the Red River Gorge (a rock climbing mecca less than 2 hours from Lousiville) so we’d made plans to go there Saturday with my buds Jason and Jenn, who were in town as well from Utah. Saturday was supposed to be the only day it wasn’t raining. It was a bit chilly and we didn’t have a whole lot of time, but we got a few routes in and had a great day. He even got to have pizza and Ale 8 at Miguel’s… because that’s what you do when you go to the Gorge.

I’m incredibly grateful to have such an awesome family and such wonderful friends. You don’t realize how many important people there are in your life until you the holidays roll around and you realize how many of them you have to see. My man-friend has just about met all the important people in my life. It took 3 trips to Louisville to fit them all in (still a few more to meet, but all in good time). It was hectic but I’m thankful that it took the whole week to get around to seeing so many people.

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday last week! Enjoy your weekend. I’m about to get up so we can finally decorate the tree we got a week ago. Happy weekend. : )

Live Tweeting A Canadian Neighborhood Hockey Game…

I’m in Canada for the week visiting my man-friend before our new year travel schedules start getting crazy. It’s been a very Canadian trip so far… but one of the things that was truly local was the New Year’s Day neighborhood hockey game. A few of my man-friend’s buddies organized a game and people just kept showing up with their hockey sticks and skates (like it’s a normal thing) and joined in the game. Even though it killed me to just sit and watch, and not participate – I didn’t have skates and hadn’t ice skated in about 15 years – I opted to take photos (instead of breaking my face open on the ice).  Naturally, a live-tweet began:

Apparently, this is how you choose teams:
everybody throws their stick into a pile, somebody goes in
and chucks the sticks left and right forming two piles.
You go where your stick goes.
The puck was flying around like crazy and I was sitting about 10 feet away
with no protection. I kinda wanted to borrow one kid’s face mask…

I brought my new mittens. They were well received.
These people have been skating since they came out of the womb.
It was incredible. I was grateful that I decided to stay out of the way.
The good news is, we went yesterday morning so I could learn to skate
and now I can… not much different than roller skating,
just a heck of a lot slippery-er and hurts more when you fall.
I’m ready for the next game!
